Accelerator Cable Replacement

Accelerator cable replacement

You’re on the freeway, and just as you hit an uphill stretch, you end up behind a massive truck transporting coal. And it’s struggling. You look past it and spot a gap. So you indicate, gear down and press hard on the accelerator pedal. And…, nothing. The pedal is stuck.

This sort of scenario can go bad very fast.

What is the accelerator cable?

You control the speed or acceleration of your car with the accelerator cable. This cable connects the accelerator pedal and the throttle body. With repeated use and friction, the accelerator cable can wear down and break. Look out for signs that you need to replace the accelerator cable.

Keep in mind:

  • If the accelerator cable is broken or frayed, it cannot relay the signal to the engine. The engine, in turn, cannot open the butterfly valves and pump oxygen into the carburettor.
  • The accelerator cable might not perform optimally because it is loose. Your Fixxr will scrutinise it and check for signs of wear. If there aren’t any, they could eliminate the problem by simply tightening it.
  • Accelerator cables all vary in length and as a result, we quite often require a sample prior to being able to provide a costing for the needed parts to perform the fix on your vehicle.

What your Fixxr will do:

  • Your Fixxr will remove the accelerator cable
  • Your Fixxr will inspect the cable for wear and tear
  • They will install a new accelerator cable if necessary
  • They will test the accelerator pedal to make sure it operates smoothly without catching

What we recommend:

We recommend that you get a Fixxr Mobile Mechanic to check the accelerator cable if you notice that the accelerator is abnormally inflexible and does not come back up immediately. If you face a situation where the accelerator stops responding and you’re driving on a busy road, use the remaining momentum you have to pull over to the side of the road. Schedule a booking with your Fixxr Mobile Mechanic to sort out the problem.

How will I know that I need to replace the accelerator cable?

  • If you need to press down hard on the accelerator for response
  • The engine does not respond immediately when you push down on the accelerator
  • Car jerking during cruise mode

Why should I do this service?

A faulty or broken accelerator cable can result in your car coming to a complete halt in the middle of traffic or, worse, on an incline. Typically, accelerator cables are highly durable, but you should request a mechanical inspection every six months to ensure that it remains in perfect working order.

I would highly recommend Maano. Not only did he replace my cambelt at less than half the price the car dealership quoted, but my son got stuck in Pretoria with his car not wanting to to start and Maano drive for an hour and a half in peak hour 5pm traffic to help us and fixed the problem. If I could rate Maano 30 out of 10, I would. Thank you Maano.
