What is the Cabin Air Filter all about?

The cabin air filter is essentially your car's version of a high quality face mask. When you turn on your aircon or heater, the air is sucked in from the outside world. Before it reaches your face through the vents, it passes through this filter to trap dust, pollen, soot, and those tiny particles of rubber from other cars' tyres that float around on the highway. It is a completely separate part from the engine air filter and its only job is to make sure the air you and your passengers breathe is as clean as possible.

In South Africa, this filter works particularly hard. Between the fine red dust during the dry winter months and the heavy pollen seasons in the Highveld, the filter can get clogged surprisingly quickly. If you have ever noticed that your aircon isn't blowing as hard as it used to, or if there is a lingering musty smell in the cabin, it is usually because this filter is saturated and can no longer let enough clean air through. Because Fixxr is a mobile service, we can swap this out while your car is parked at home or the office, ensuring you breathe fresh air on your next commute.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Cabin Air Filter?

  • Weak airflow from vents: Even on the highest setting, the air feels like a gentle breeze rather than a strong blast of cold or warm air.
  • Unpleasant or musty odors: Dust and moisture trapped in a dirty filter can start to smell like old socks or damp cardboard when the fan is running.
  • Excessive noise when the fan is high: A clogged filter makes the blower motor work much harder, which often results in a whistling or humming sound from the dashboard.
  • Dust settling on the dashboard: If the filter is old or has holes, fine particles will bypass it and end up all over your interior surfaces.
  • Windows fogging up: Poor airflow makes it much harder for the defrost system to clear moisture from the inside of your glass quickly.

Common causes

Heavy dust and pollution
Driving daily in heavy traffic or on unpaved roads in Gauteng or the Western Cape fills the filter fibers very quickly.
Organic debris
Small leaves, twigs, and even seeds can get sucked into the intake vents and physically block the surface of the filter.
Humid weather conditions
Moisture from the air can get trapped in the filter material, leading to the growth of mold or mildew that causes bad smells.
Neglected service intervals
Most manufacturers recommend a change every 15,000 to 30,000 kilometers, as the filter eventually loses its ability to trap fine pollutants.

What to expect

  • This is a straightforward task that usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Your car should be parked in a spot where the mechanic can fully open the passenger side door. You do not need to provide any tools or special equipment. There is no downtime and you can drive the car as soon as the mechanic is finished. You will likely notice that the cabin reaches your desired temperature much faster than it did before.

How it's done

  1. The mechanic identifies the location of the filter, which is usually found behind the glovebox or under the passenger side dashboard.
  2. The access panel or glovebox is carefully removed to reveal the filter housing cover.
  3. The old, dirty filter is pulled out, and the mechanic inspects the housing for any loose leaves or debris that need to be cleaned out.
  4. A new, vehicle-specific filter is inserted, making sure the airflow direction arrows are pointing the correct way.
  5. The housing cover and any interior trim or glovebox components are reinstalled and secured.
  6. The aircon system is turned on to verify that the airflow is strong and the air coming from the vents is fresh and odorless.

Average Pricing in South Africa

For a standard compact car or sedan like a Toyota Quest or a Ford Figo, a cabin filter replacement typically costs between R500 and R900. If you drive a luxury SUV or a larger vehicle that requires specialized charcoal-activated filters, the price can range from R1,200 to R1,800. These prices include the call-out fee, the part itself, and the labor. Prices vary depending on how difficult it is to access the filter in your specific model.

How important is this service?

Ignoring a dirty cabin air filter is not just about comfort; it is about your health. Breathing in unfiltered traffic fumes and allergens during a long commute can trigger hay fever or respiratory issues. Additionally, a blocked filter puts a massive strain on your aircon's blower motor. If the motor burns out because it was fighting against a clogged filter, you will be looking at a repair bill five times more expensive than a simple filter swap.

Keep in mind

  • Fixxr mechanics come to your location so you can have fresh air without wasting your lunch break at a dealership.
  • Ask for an "activated carbon" filter if you frequently drive in heavy traffic because it helps neutralize exhaust smells better than standard paper ones.
  • If you park your car under trees, check your filter more often as falling leaves are the number one cause of blocked intakes.
  • Changing this filter is one of the easiest ways to improve the environment inside your car and keep it smelling like new.

Our recommendation:

Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and change the cabin air filter as recommended. If you regularly park your car under a tree or near bushes, the cabin air filter(s) will likely suck up debris and leaves, becoming dirtier, faster.
