Injector Control Pressure Sensor Replacement

What is the Injector Control Pressure Sensor all about?

In a fuel injection system, it’s important that the computer has information concerning the amount of fuel pressure in the rail at all times. This information is necessary for the computer to determine the actual injector timing, the width of each pulse, and the pressure required during operation.

In some diesel engines (notably many Ford engines), this job is done by the injector control pressure sensor or ICP. The sensor works on the basis of capacitance and feeds an analogue voltage signal to the vehicle’s computer that tells it how much pressure is in the rail.

Like all other sensors, the injector control pressure sensor is subject to wear and tear and eventual failure through normal use. If it fails, the computer will be unable to determine the pressure in the rail, which will adversely affect the operation of the engine.

Keep in mind:

  • The injector control pressure sensor is not inspected during normal maintenance.
  • The sensor can fail due to wiring problems, sensor deterioration, degradation, and other causes.
  • The sensor is part of the fuel system. Do not attempt to work on this yourself.

How it’s done:

  • The vehicle is lifted and supported on jack stands
  • The defective injector control pressure sensor is removed
  • The new injector control pressure sensor is installed
  • The new sensor is checked for proper operation and the jack stands removed
  • The engine is run and the vehicle is road tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

Without an operational ICP, your vehicle’s computer will be unable to operate the fuel injection system correctly. This can result in a number of problems, ranging from lean or rich operation to the Check Engine light turning on. Have a faulty sensor inspected immediately.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Injector Control Pressure Sensor?

  • Engine stutters or stumbles
  • Check Engine light is on
  • The engine has a rough idle

How important is this service?

Your vehicle’s computer needs to be able to determine the pressure in the rail at all times. If the ICP fails, expect erroneous engine operation, rough idling, and the Check Engine light to turn on. Have this issue diagnosed immediately. Remember – fuel system work is never something that should be undertaken on your own. Always leave it to our expert mechanics with the proper work area, experience and safety equipment.

Osweld Dube Prompt and Insightful

Monday July 28, 2025 I requested a quote to replace Brakes on my car and was booked immediately for 11:30am. Osweld arrived 30 minutes before and was helpful when I did not have the correct parts. Having spent the entire day to get the correct parts and do the replacement. Although I was not present during the replacement, my husband was, and he was very friendly and knowledgeable. Fantastic Service. I would hope to have him as the mechanic in my next round of repair/replacements.

Replacement of Break Discs and Break Pads - Landrover Discovery

I recently had my brake discs and pads replaced on my Land Rover Discovery, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the service. The mechanic was exceptionally punctual, arriving exactly when promised—something that’s rare and greatly appreciated.

Throughout the job, he displayed a high level of professionalism and mechanical skill, completing the work efficiently and with clear attention to detail. What really stood out was his ability to explain everything in a way I could understand, along with sound recommendations on other areas that may need attention down the line—without any pressure to get extra work done immediately.

Overall, this was a smooth, stress-free experience and I’d confidently recommend him to any Land Rover owner looking for reliable, expert service.
