Why is My Car Overheating in Traffic? 4 Common Causes
You are stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Ben Schoeman highway. The August afternoon sun is beating down, and you suddenly notice the temperature gauge on your dashboard creeping dangerously close to the red zone. If you start driving again, the temperature drops slightly, but the moment you stop, it spikes back up.
An engine overheating is one of the most stressful situations a driver can face. Modern engines operate at incredibly high temperatures, and their cooling systems rely on a delicate balance of pressure, fluid, and airflow. When one part fails, the whole system collapses.
If your car is running hot, here are the four most likely culprits.
If your car only overheats when idling in traffic but cools down when you are cruising at 100km/h on the highway, a broken radiator fan is the prime suspect.
When you are driving at speed, natural wind rushes through your car’s grille to cool the radiator fluid. But when you are stopped in traffic, there is no wind. Your car relies entirely on an electric cooling fan to pull air through the radiator. If the fan motor burns out or the temperature sensor relay fails, the coolant boils rapidly.
Quick Fixxr Tip: If you are stuck in traffic and the car starts overheating, turn your air conditioning OFF immediately, and turn your interior heater ON to full blast. It will be uncomfortable, but it pulls heat away from the engine block and might buy you enough time to pull over safely.
Remember those freezing July mornings we warned you about in our Highveld Winter Car Prep Guide? Freezing temperatures make plastic and rubber cooling components incredibly brittle. As the weather warms up in August, those weakened radiator hoses and plastic water pumps begin to expand and crack.
Without enough coolant (antifreeze) in the system, your engine cannot transfer heat away from the metal cylinders.
Quick Fixxr Tip: Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot. The system is highly pressurized, and boiling coolant will spray out, causing severe burns. Wait at least an hour before checking the fluid levels.
The thermostat is a small mechanical valve that acts as the gatekeeper for your cooling system. When you first start your car, it stays closed to allow the engine to warm up quickly. Once the engine reaches optimal temperature, the thermostat opens, releasing hot coolant into the radiator to be cooled down.
If the thermostat gets stuck in the "closed" position, the hot fluid is trapped inside the engine block. The temperature gauge will spike to the red zone within minutes of driving.
Quick Fixxr Tip: Thermostats are relatively inexpensive components. If you are having your water pump replaced (a common issue we noted in our Polo Vivo Guide), it is highly recommended to replace the thermostat at the same time as preventative maintenance.
This is the worst-case scenario. The head gasket is a crucial seal between the top and bottom halves of your engine. If you ignore a red temperature warning light and continue driving, the metal engine block will warp, and the head gasket will blow.
When this happens, coolant mixes with engine oil, and exhaust gases are pushed directly into the cooling system.
The Symptoms:
Thick white smoke billowing from your exhaust.
Your engine oil looks milky, like a chocolate milkshake.
A constant bubbling sound coming from the coolant reservoir.
