While your main brakes use hydraulic fluid to stop you, the handbrake (or parking brake) is a purely mechanical system. The handbrake release cable is the critical link between your hand (or foot) and the ratchet mechanism that keeps the brakes locked. In many South African bakkies and SUVs, like the Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger, you might have a foot-operated pedal with a separate "pull" handle under the dash to release it—this handle relies entirely on the release cable. If this cable snaps or becomes jammed with Highveld dust, your car stays locked in place, effectively "handcuffed" to its parking spot.
If your handbrake release cable is not working and the brake is engaged, do not drive the vehicle. That will only damage the braking system and increase your repair bill. One of our experienced mechanics will often be able to fix the problem in short order.
Having a working handbrake release cable is important. Without one, you won’t be able to use your handbrake (or disengage the brake if it’s on). We recommend you work with our expert mechanics who can diagnose the problem.
