What is the Differential/Gear Oil all about?

The differential is the heavy mechanical box located between your wheels that allows them to turn at different speeds when you go around a corner. Without it, your tyres would scrub and hop every time you turned into a parking bay or navigated a Johannesburg roundabout.

The gears inside this box are under immense pressure and handle the full torque of your engine, they require a very specific, thick type of gear oil to prevent the metal teeth from grinding each other down. In South Africa, our high ambient temperatures and the heavy loads carried by many bakkies and SUVs put a massive strain on this fluid. Over time, the oil breaks down and loses its ability to cushion the gears, eventually turning into a gritty sludge that can lead to a catastrophic mechanical failure.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Differential/Gear Oil?

Whining or howling noises: A high-pitched sound that changes in volume as you accelerate or decelerate usually means the gear oil is too thin or low.
Clunking when turning: If you hear a mechanical "thud" while navigating tight corners, the gears may not be sliding smoothly against each other.
Oil spots on the driveway: Seeing thick, pungent-smelling oil under the center of your axle is a sign that a seal has failed and your differential is running dry.
Unusual vibrations: If the car feels like it is shuddering through the floorboards at highway speeds, it could be caused by worn gears due to poor lubrication.
Burning smell: After a long drive, a distinct, heavy chemical smell near the rear of the car indicates the gear oil is overheating and scorched.

Common causes

Natural oxidation: Like all lubricants, gear oil chemically breaks down over several years of use and loses its protective properties.
Water contamination: Driving through deep puddles or localized flooding during heavy Highveld storms can force water into the differential through the breather vent.
Metal shavings: As the gears age, tiny flakes of metal break off and circulate in the oil, acting like an abrasive that accelerates wear.
Heavy towing and hauling: Pulling a caravan or carrying heavy equipment generates extreme heat in the differential that cooks the oil much faster than normal driving.
Leaking seals: Brittle rubber gaskets or pinion seals allow oil to escape, leaving the internal metal components vulnerable to friction.

How it's done

The mechanic lifts the vehicle and secures it on safety stands to gain access to the differential housing.
The drain plug is removed or, on some models, the entire rear cover is unbolted to let the old, dark oil drain into a catchment container.
The mechanic cleans the magnetic drain plug, which is designed to catch any metal shavings, and inspects the debris for signs of major gear damage.
If the cover was removed, a brand-new gasket or specialized RTV sealant is applied to ensure a leak-proof seal.
Fresh, high-quality gear oil is pumped into the housing until it reaches the exact level specified by the manufacturer.
The fill plug is tightened, the area is cleaned of any spills, and the mechanic performs a road test to ensure the drivetrain is silent and smooth.

What to expect

This service is typically completed in 45 to 60 minutes. Your vehicle needs to be parked on a flat, solid surface like a driveway or garage floor. The mechanic brings a specialized pump to handle the thick gear oil, so there is no mess left behind. You do not need to provide any tools or cleanup equipment. You will notice that the car runs more quietly and the drivetrain feels smoother immediately. The car is ready for use as soon as the mechanic finishes the final inspection.

Average Pricing in South Africa

For a standard rear-wheel-drive sedan or hatchback, a mobile differential oil change usually costs between R950 and R1,600. If you drive a 4x4 bakkie or a large SUV that has both front and rear differentials, the price typically ranges from R1,800 to R3,500 for a full service. These estimates include the call-out fee, the specialized gear oil, and professional labor. Prices vary based on whether your vehicle requires standard mineral oil or high-performance synthetic gear oil with specific additives for Limited Slip Differentials (LSD).

How important is this service?

The differential is one of the most expensive mechanical components in your car to replace. If the oil fails and the gears seize while you are driving at high speed, it can cause the wheels to lock up entirely, which is a massive safety hazard. At best, a neglected differential will eventually require a total rebuild or replacement, which often costs upwards of R20,000. Changing the gear oil is a relatively cheap way to protect your drivetrain and avoid being stranded with a broken axle.

Keep in mind:

If you have a 4x4, remember that you have two differentials and a transfer case that all require regular oil changes.
Some modern cars use "sealed for life" differentials, but South African conditions are so harsh that we still recommend an inspection every 50,000km.
Always check if your car has a Limited Slip Differential (LSD), as using the wrong oil can cause the internal clutches to chatter and fail.
