What is the License Plate Light all about?

Your license plate light, often called a number plate lamp, is a small but legally critical component that ensures your vehicle's identification is visible to traffic officers and other motorists at night. While most older South African vehicles rely on traditional incandescent bulbs that generate a lot of heat and burn out frequently, many owners are now switching to LED alternatives for better reliability.

These bulbs are wired to trigger automatically whenever your park lights or headlights are on. Since the bulbs are usually tucked away under a small ledge on your boot or bumper, it is easy to miss when one has failed until a traffic officer points it out during a roadside check. Our mobile mechanics can swap these out at your location to ensure you stay on the right side of the law.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the License Plate Light?

  • Complete darkness over the plate: The most obvious sign is that your rear number plate is no longer visible in the dark.
  • Partial illumination: If your car has two bulbs and only one is working, the plate will look unevenly lit and may still attract a fine.
  • Flickering light: A loose bulb or damaged socket can cause the light to blink on and off as you drive over rough surfaces.
  • Dashboard warning light: Modern luxury cars often display a specific "check lamp" or "number plate light" error message on the instrument cluster.

Common causes

Filament failure:
High vibration from driving on corrugated roads or hitting potholes can cause the thin wire inside a standard bulb to snap.
Moisture ingress
Heavy Highveld rain or frequent high-pressure car washes can force water into the housing, leading to short circuits or corrosion.
Corroded terminals
Because these lights are exposed to road spray and dirt, the metal contacts can rust and stop the flow of electricity.
Natural aging
Standard bulbs have a limited lifespan and will eventually turn black and fail due to thousands of hours of use.

How it's done

  1. The mechanic inspects the rear of the vehicle to confirm which bulbs are inoperative and checks the housing for physical damage.
  2. Small screws or plastic clips are removed to pop the clear lens cover off the bumper or boot lid.
  3. The old bulb is carefully pulled from the socket and the internal contacts are cleaned of any dust or corrosion.
  4. A new white bulb of the correct wattage is inserted and the light is switched on to verify a solid connection.
  5. The plastic lens is cleaned and snapped or screwed back into place to ensure a water-tight seal.
  6. A final check is performed from several meters away to make sure the plate is clearly legible.

How important is this service?

A non-functional number plate light is a magnet for "fix-it" tickets and fines from the SAPS or Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department. Beyond the legal risk, these lights are essential for vehicle identification in the event of an accident or emergency after dark. Keeping your plate visible is a basic part of being a responsible road user and ensures you aren't given a reason to be pulled over during a routine patrol.

Keep in mind:

  • Only white light is legal for number plates in South Africa, as blue or colored bulbs will lead to an immediate fine.
  • Upgrading to LED bulbs is highly recommended because they are more resistant to the vibration caused by our bumpy roads.
  • Your plate must be clearly readable from at least 15 meters away to meet the national road traffic regulations.

Our recommendation:

  • LEDs use less than half the wattage compared to their incandescent counterparts.
  • It’s hard to notice if your license plate lights are burnt out until a police officer pulls you over and gives you a summons to fix it, so periodically check them yourself after sundown.
