Why is My Steering Wheel Shaking at 120km/h?
You are cruising down the N1 or M1 highway, the traffic has finally cleared, and you accelerate up to the 120km/h speed limit. But as the speedometer climbs, your steering wheel starts to shake violently in your hands. You slow down to 100km/h, and the vibration suddenly vanishes.
A shaking steering wheel is one of the most common—and alarming—symptoms a driver can experience. While it is rarely a sign that your wheels are about to fall off, ignoring it is a bad idea. Driving with a severe vibration accelerates tyre wear, damages your suspension, and drastically reduces your control in an emergency.
If your steering wheel is wobbling at highway speeds, here are the four most likely culprits.
If the shaking only happens at a very specific speed—typically starting around 100km/h and peaking at 120km/h—an unbalanced wheel is the most likely suspect.
When tyres are fitted to your rims, tiny lead weights are attached to the inside of the wheel to ensure the weight is distributed perfectly evenly. Thanks to the infamous potholes on South African roads, it is incredibly common for these weights to get knocked off. Even a difference of a few grams can cause the wheel to rotate unevenly. At 120km/h, that tiny imbalance translates into a rapid, aggressive vibration that travels straight up the steering column into your hands.
Here is the golden diagnostic question: Does the steering wheel shake while you are accelerating/cruising, or only when you step on the brake pedal?
If your car rides smoothly at 120km/h but the steering wheel shudders violently the moment you apply the brakes, you likely have warped brake discs (rotors). This is known as Disc Thickness Variation (DTV). It happens when the metal discs overheat and warp, or when brake pad material transfers unevenly onto the disc surface. When you brake, the brake calipers squeeze against this uneven surface, causing a rapid juddering sensation. If this is the case, you will need to replace your brake pads and discs.
Hitting a deep pothole on a dark Highveld morning doesn't always result in an immediate blowout. Often, the impact bends the inner lip of the alloy rim slightly out of shape, or damages the internal steel belts of the tyre, causing a bulge (a "flat spot" or "egg").
Unlike an unbalanced wheel, a bent rim or damaged tyre will often cause a subtle vibration at low speeds (like 40km/h) that progressively gets much worse as you approach highway speeds.
Your vehicle's suspension system—which includes control arms, tie rod ends, ball joints, and shock absorbers—is a complex network designed to keep your wheels firmly planted on the road. Over time, the rubber bushings in these components dry out, crack, and wear away.
When a tie rod end or ball joint becomes loose, the wheel is allowed to physically wobble slightly from side to side. At 120km/h, this "play" in the suspension creates a significant shake in the steering wheel and can cause your car to wander or pull to one side of the road.
A steering wheel vibration is your car's way of telling you that something rotating is out of alignment or damaged. If you ignore an unbalanced wheel for too long, the constant vibration will eventually destroy your wheel bearings and suspension bushings, turning a minor maintenance task into a massive repair bill.
